GENERAL DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS |
||
Sulfadiazine is a short-acting sulfonamide antibiotic used in the treatment of infections due to susceptible organisms, including nocardiosis, toxoplasmosis, otitis media caused by susceptible strains of Haemophilus influenzae, streptococci, and pneumococci, and falciparum malaria caused by chloroquine-resistant plasmodia. It eliminates bacteria by stopping the production of folic acid inside the bacterial cell, and is commonly used to treat urinary tract infections. It is frequently used in combination with other sulfonamides and pyrimethamine to treat toxoplasmosis in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and in newborns with congenital infections. Silver sulfadiazine (the silver derivative of sulfadiazine) is a topical antibacterial against many gram-positive and gram-negative organisms, as well as being effective against yeasts; used as a topical antiinfective for the prevention and treatment of second- and third-degree burns. The sodium salt of sulfadiazine has the same actions with the base and is administered intravenously. |
